A Composition Checklist to Ask Your Photographer About

Most agents don’t have a photography background, and they shouldn’t need one — but knowing a few of the right questions to ask your real estate photographer before a shoot helps you tell a genuinely considered photographer from one who’s just pointing a camera at each room in sequence.

Ask about vantage point, not just the room

A good photographer picks a specific corner or angle in each room that shows the most usable space and best sightlines, rather than shooting from the doorway by default. It’s worth asking whether they typically shoot from multiple positions per room before settling on the final angle, since that extra step is where a lot of the quality difference comes from.

Ask how they handle straight lines

Crooked verticals are one of the most common, most fixable issues in amateur real estate photography — a photographer who’s serious about composition will correct these both during the shoot (camera positioning) and in editing, rather than relying entirely on post-production to fix framing mistakes.

Ask what gets left out of frame, and why

Good composition is as much about what’s excluded as what’s included — clutter, cords, bins, and other distracting elements should be considered before the shutter clicks, not cropped or edited out afterward. A photographer who talks about this proactively, rather than just showing up and shooting, is usually the more considered choice.

Ask to see a full gallery, not just highlight shots

Every photographer’s portfolio shows their best individual images — what matters more is asking to see a complete, unedited gallery from a real listing, since that’s where consistency (or the lack of it) actually shows up. A strong single photo is easy; a consistently strong set of 20 is where the real skill is.
